James R. Gavin III, MD, PhD

James R. Gavin III, MD, PhD, is CEO & Chief Medical Officer of Healing Our Village, Inc., Clinical Professor of Medicine  at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA, and Clinical Professor of Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, IN. Dr. Gavin was President of Morehouse School of Medicine from 2002 to 2004. He served as Senior Scientific Officer at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) in Chevy Chase, MD, from 1991 to 2002 and was Director of the HHMI-National Institutes of Health Research Scholars Program from 2000 to 2002. Before joining the senior staff of HHMI, Dr. Gavin was Professor and Chief of the Diabetes Section, Acting Chief of the Section on Endocrinology, Metabolism and Hypertension, and the William K. Warren Professor for Diabetes Studies at the University Of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City. He previously served as Associate Professor of Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, and was a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS). He continues to serve as a reserve officer in the USPHS.

Active in clinical research, Dr. Gavin has authored or coauthored more than 200 articles and abstracts for such publications as Science, Journal of Applied Physiology, Diabetes, and the American Journal of Physiology. He has also authored two books: Healing Our Village: A Self-Care Guide for Diabetes Control (with L. Coleman) and Dr. Gavin's Health Guide for African Americans (with S. Landrum). Dr. Gavin served as host of the PowerPoint Health Radio Show for WCLK Radio (91.9 FM) in Atlanta.
Dr. Gavin is Chairman Emeritus of the National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) and a past member of the Advisory Council to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disorders. He is National Program Director of the Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation . He is also chairman of the Data Safety Monitoring Board for the VA Cooperative Diabetes Study. He is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Diabetes Association (ADA), the American Society of Clinical Investigation, the American Association of Physicians, and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. He is a past president of the American Diabetes Association and was voted Clinician of the Year in Diabetes by the ADA in 1991.

Additional honors include the Banting Medal for Distinguished Service from the ADA, Internist of the Year from the National Medical Association, the Emory University Medal for Distinguished Achievement, and the Distinguished Alumni Award from Duke University School of Medicine. He is recipient of the Alberto Houssay Award from the NMQF and the Congressional Black Caucus, and the F. C. Greenwood Award from the RCMI of NCRR at NIH. Dr. Gavin is on the board of  trustees for Livingstone College, Emory University, and is Trustee Emeritus of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. He is also the national program director of the Harold Amos Faculty Development Program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Dr. Gavin graduated from Livingstone College in Salisbury, North Carolina, with a degree in chemistry. He earned his doctorate in biochemistry at Emory University and his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, North Carolina. His postgraduate training included an internship in pathology at Duke University School of Medicine, an internship and a residency in internal medicine at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, and a clinical fellowship in metabolism at Washington University School of Medicine.
