Ms. Kornegay will discuss methods for integrating different health professionals into a unified care delivery team. Community Based Faculty of healthcare students will learn ways to build these teams within their own practice, and to demonstrate the principles of interdisciplinary care teams to students. Characteristics of productive team members, suggested team structures, and team communication styles will be explored.

Session Description:
The delivery of quality, effective health care requires a team of committed individuals working together towards a common goal. Multidisciplinary teams working together make fewer mistakes and ultimately achieve better outcomes for their patients. Statewide AHEC Network Program Executive Director Denise Kornegay, MSW will discuss the most effective methods for integrating health professionals into a cohesive multidisciplinary team; creating structures and communication patterns that foster interdisciplinary care; and identifying and addressing team challenges. Ms. Kornegay will also provide Community Based Faculty suggestions on engaging students in teams.

Session Objectives:
Session participants will:

  1. Understand the individual contributions to a team
  2. Identify strategies to create structures that support team delivery of care
  3. Articulate communication strategies to insure team members are effectively communicating with one another and with patients
  4. Identify student engagement strategies on existing teams
  5. Identify team challenges and articulate recommended interventions
