Georgia Health Sciences University – Medical College of Georgia
Co-Director, Brain & Behavior Discovery Institute
Clinical Co-Director, Institute of Neuroscience

Session Description:
Dr. David Hess shares statistical information regarding the US stroke belt and the stroke subtypes (hemorrhagic & ischemic). He discusses the four effective treatments in acute stroke. Dr. Hess offers various data regarding National Institute Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) research and European Cooperative Acute Stroke Study (ECASS) III research on the criteria and efficiency use of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA). He emphasizes Joint Commission Primary Stroke Center guidelines related to ischemic stroke from admission to discharge in the US hospital.

Dr. Hess provides information regarding the geographic penalty in stroke care and how telemedicine may offer a decrease in the penalty in smaller rural hospitals. He emphasizes that in acute ischemic stroke “time is brain” for increased chance in survival and decreases in neurologic impairment. Dr. Hess also mentions current therapies in the research stage that may prove to be beneficial after research is completed.

Session Objectives:
On completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  1. Review the use of tissue plasminogen activator for stroke.
  2. Describe how telemedicine can remove geographic barriers.
  3. Describe principle of quality stroke care with focus on Joint Commission Primary Stroke Care Center guidelines.
  4. Review treatments on the horizon for acute stroke.
