Session Description:
Differences in the quality and availability of health care are problems which significantly affect the health of minorities, and affect likelihood of positive care outcomes. Join Dr. Kenworth Holness, of the Carl Vinson VA Medical Center in Dublin, GA, as he discusses what health care disparities are and who is affected, why disparities exist, and what steps are being taken by clinical care providers to reduce and eliminate health care disparities. Dr. Holness will also discuss specific tools individual providers can use in their practices to address these barriers to care.

Session Objectives:

  • Participants can describe and discuss health care disparities and who suffers from them.
  • Participants understand the reasons that health care disparities exist.
  • Participants can discusses specific steps being taken to address disparities, and understand tools practitioners can use to address them, such as the NIH Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities, the Kleinman method of eliciting health beliefs in clinical encounters, the LEARN model of cross-cultural encounter guidelines, and other evidence-based methodologies to reduce disparities.
