Cardio-Metabolic Syndrome: Downstream Economic & Patient Impact

Session Description:
Cardio-Metabolic Syndrome (CMS) is a cluster of disease and risk factors that have reached epidemic proportions in Georgia, in the United States, and across many countries around the world. CMS risk factors increase cardiovascular endpoints such as stroke, congestive heart failure, chronic kidney disease (CKD), and overall increases in mortality. The presenter will provide educational content related to the definition of CMS, how to recognize the effects of CMS on general health and on long term survival.

Session Objectives:

  • Describe the definition of Cardio-Metabolic Syndrome (CMS).
  • Recognize the effects of CMS on general health.
  • Discuss the effects of CMS on long term survival.

About Dr. Lattouf:
Dr. Omar M. Lattouf is a Professor of Surgery in the Division of Thoracic Surgery at Emory University School of Medicine, where he has also been an attending physician for over 10 years. Dr. Lattouf earned his Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Anatomy from Emory University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Doctor of Medicine from Emory University School of Medicine, Residency in General Surgery from Emory University Affiliated Hospital, and Fellowship in Cardiac Transplantation. He is credentialed by the Georgia Medical Board and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and considered a fellow of the American College of Cardiologists and the American College of Surgeons.
