Pulmonary Hypertension: Clinical Updates (CURE Activity)

SOWEGA-AHEC, in partnership with Tift Regional Medical Center and the UGA College of Pharmacy, has developed CE/CME/ACPE opportunities for healthcare professionals. CURE Activities are presented by experienced practitioners who share cutting edge educational content.

Those interested in watching without receiving CE/CME/ACPE, the programs are FREE. Attendees requesting CE/CME/ACPE, must complete an evaluation/post-test and pay a nominal fee.

Sponsor: Southwest Georgia Area Health Education Center (SOWEGA-AHEC)

Session Description:
Dr. Brian Shapiro conducts the presentation in a patient case based scenario format with various lab values, patient testing scores, and current appropriate technology driven tests/devices currently used. He discusses the pathophysiology of pulmonary hypertension including the common risk factors and associated conditions, vascular injury and disease progression. Speaker details the importance of monitoring patient hemodynamic values related to the pulmonary and cardiac systems. He signifies the correlation of decreases in right ventricular systolic pressure (RVSP), cardiac output (CO), right ventricular (RV) function and increases in pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR). Dr. Shapiro discusses various methods of determining or calculating pulmonary hypertension. He provides additional information related to but not limited to fractional area change (FAC), Tricuspid Annular Plane Systolic Excursion (TAPSE), RV Annular Tissue Doppler, RIMP, Acute Vasodilator Testing, PAH treatment algorithm.

Session Objectives:
On completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Describe the pathophysiology of pulmonary hypertension and its adverse impact on the heart.
  • Recognize the disease and order appropriate testing for patients.
  • Discuss the various diagnostic invasive and noninvasive tests which aid in diagnostic and therapeutic decisions.
  • Determine best course of treatment for pulmonary hypertension
