Session Description:
Dr. Margaret Johnson discusses medical therapy for Chronic Obstruction Pulmonary Disease (COPD) including several supportive measures, various drug therapies, use of oxygen at different times and non-pharmacologic therapies. She details the goals of therapy and what may assist in achieving the goals. She provides information related to the coexistence of pulmonary hypertension in COPD and the medical management of both. Dr. Johnson emphasizes that medications improve patient symptoms and reduce exacerbations but no pharmacologic therapy decreases mortality or slows loss of lung function. Dr. Johnson discusses when to consider lung volume reduction (bronchoscopic or surgical) or transplant options. She details that COPD is the primary indication for lung transplant with 31% that are provided in US.
Session Objectives:
On completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
- Describe the outcomes achieved with medical therapy for COPD.
- Associate the frequency of pulmonary hypertension in COPD and develop an approach to management.
- Recognize the systemic complications of COPD.
- List indications and timing for referral for lung volume reduction surgery and lung transplant evaluation.
