Session Description:
Dr. Richard Lottenberg details the most current management plan for patients diagnosed with sickle cell disease. He shares the data collected and evidence-based treatment options from randomized controlled trials impacting the care of patients with sickle cell disease. He discusses clinical manifestations, clinical evaluations, and optimization of pain management, fever and acute anemia related to the disease. Acute Chest Syndrome is defined, detailed and data described from National Acute Chest Syndrome Study Group is provided to reinforce the appropriate medical treatment for syndrome. Sickle cell disease modifying therapies, such as hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, chronic red blood cell transfusions and hydroxyurea therapy are discussed.
Session Objectives:
On completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
- Describe the pathophysiology of sickle cell disease.
- Describe the evaluation and treatment of pain in a patient with sickle cell disease.
- Identify clinical features and treatment of acute chest syndrome.

About Dr. Lottenberg
Dr. Richard Lottenberg is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology and Oncology at the University of Florida, College of Medicine. Dr. Lottenberg completed his Medical Degree, Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Florida, College of Medicine. He completed his Hematology & Oncology fellowship at Washington University School of Medicine.
Dr. Lottenberg holds board certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine, with a subspecialty in Hematology. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.
