Colorectal Cancer: Preventable! Treatable! Beatable! (CURE Activity)

Session Description:

Dr. Durado Brooks shares details regarding the colorectal cancer incidence across the nation and within the borders of Georgia, trends in the incidence and the mortality rates of colorectal cancer. He discusses modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors of colorectal cancer. Dr. Brooks provides data from research regarding a proper cancer risk assessment. During the presentation, he describes the benefits of screening and how the population ranks in colorectal cancer screening based on years of education, insurance status, minority population exams, and race/ethnicity. Dr. Brooks offers information about various screening options (colonoscopy, CT colonography, gFOBTs, FIT) and how to best advise the practitioner and his/her patients on which is most appropriate. 

Session Objectives: 
On completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  1. Describe the impact of colorectal cancer in the US and in clinical practice.
  2. Discuss evidence supporting clinical recommendations for colorectal cancer screening.
  3. Assess risk for colorectal cancer and assist patients in appropriate screening method.
  4. Detail common barriers to colorectal cancer screening and strategies to address the barriers

About Dr. Brooks
Working within the American Cancer Society at the National Home Office as the Director of the Prostate & Colorectal Cancer Division, Dr. Durado Brooks is involved in creating strategies to improve the prevention and early detection of cancer, and to assist those who are diagnosed with the disease. He is also actively engaged in initiatives designed to eliminate disparities in cancer prevention, detection and outcomes.

An internist by training, he has spent much of his career working to enhance the role of prevention in primary care and to improve care for medically underserved populations. 
An Ohio native, Dr. Brooks received his medical degree from Wright State University School of Medicine in Dayton, Ohio, where he subsequently completed his internal medicine residency and served as chief resident. He also holds a master’s degree in Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health.
