Session Description:

Dr. Stephanie Walsh shares details regarding the incidence obesity across the nation and within the borders of Georgia, trends in the incidence and the mortality rates of obesity. She discusses epidemiology of childhood obesity and the resulting complications from obesity. She shares primary care practice guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment options. 

Dr. Walsh provides information regarding the obesity relationship with insulin dependent and type II diabetes, polycystic ovarian syndrome, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NFLD), hypertension, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnea and others health related. During the presentation, she describes the benefits of the mastered art of communication in the provider centered and patient centered format. 

Session Objectives: 
On completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  1. Define the epidemiology of childhood obesity and it’s resulting complications
  2. Discuss the pathophysiology of the most common comorbidities of childhood obesity
  3. Illustrate best practice guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment options for childhood obesity
  4. Demonstrate patient centered counseling techniques to promote healthy lifestyle change within the family structure

About Stephanie Walsh, MD, MS, FAAP
Dr. Stephanie Walsh is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics for the Emory University School of Medicine. She is the Medical Director of Child Wellness and a hospitalist at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston. She also serves in the Health 4 Life Clinic in Atlanta. 

Dr. Walsh graduated from the Medical College of Georgia, School of Medicine and completed her pediatric residency at Emory University, School of Medicine. She completed her Master of Science degree in Exercise Science from Georgia State University. She is board certified in pediatric medicine. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
