Sponsor: Statewide AHEC Program Office
Presenter:
Lori Prince
Session Description:
The worldwide transition to the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10) was completed in 1994. Due to the enormous number of modifications that needed to occur in order for the classification to be useful in the American healthcare system, the United States remains the last country to implement ICD-10.
In the United States, ICD-10 is now referred to as the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) for the diagnoses and International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Procedure Classification System (ICD-10-PCS) for the procedures. This presentation will concentrate on the modifications that comprise the procedure codes, namely ICD-10-PCS.
Session Objectives:
After this presentation the learner will be able to:
- Discuss the development of ICD-10-PCS;
- Identify the major modifications;
- Recognize the structure and format of ICD-10-PCS codes; and
- Become familiar with the coding conventions for ICD-10-PCS.
