Healthcare Georgia Foundation Announces the Partnership for Southern Equity as the Inaugural Recipient of Health Equity Award

This recipient organization will be honored during the Foundation’s rescheduled Connections conference taking place March 28 – 29, 2022

Atlanta, GA – August 7, 2020 – Healthcare Georgia Foundation is pleased to announce the Partnership for Southern Equity (PSE) as the recipient of the Foundation’s first Health Equity Award. By establishing this new biennial accolade, the Foundation seeks to uplift and recognize organizations who are relentless in their pursuit of health equity for all, who inspire leaders for health equity, stimulate public discourse on what improves health, and more.

Established in 2008, the Partnership for Southern Equity utilizes a holistic approach comprised of four portfolios (Just Health, Just Energy, Just Growth, and Just Opportunity), to address and improve a wide variety of issues that affect underserved Georgians every day. This strategy not only focuses on the big-picture needs of vulnerable populations, but also seeks to provide assistance for everyday problems that can disrupt the well-being of these communities.

Dr. Gary Nelson, President of Healthcare Georgia Foundation, commented on the Partnership for Southern Equity’s award by saying, “PSE has boldly and thoughtfully embarked on a journey of bringing transformative change to the American South.” He continued, “They demonstrate an unwavering commitment to the social determinants of health, and racism is the most detrimental determinant of health. The way they have created an inclusive and visionary environment not only within their organization, but within their entire sphere of influence, is a true inspiration to the nonprofit community. The Foundation is honored to present PSE with the inaugural Health Equity Award, and we look forward to PSE’s leadership and continuation of their incredibly important work in dismantling the obstacles to social justice.”

Nathaniel Smith, Founder and Chief Equity Officer of the Partnership for Southern Equity, said of the award, “We look at the Healthcare Georgia Foundation as a key and important partner in advancing towards the Beloved Community, where all people have a chance to reach their full potential, and a ZIP code does not have the power over someone’s health more than the goals that they have in their hearts.” Smith continued, “I’m just so honored and appreciative of this opportunity, and this award. We are truly humbled and thankful for the relationship that we have with Healthcare Georgia Foundation, the various friends that we’ve been able to cultivate through The Two Georgias Initiative, the spark that we’ve been able to help cultivate by working with our partners to advance health equity, and even more so racial justice through the lens of healthy outcomes.”
